Victorious Derby Day Dads back in the Centre!

Saturday 18th June saw almost forty of Harlow's Dads and families pit their skills against each other in the Harvey Centre's exciting Dad Derby Day.
The Centre had arranged a series of challenges for the Dads to try their hand at, with some assistance from their children, as they attempted to be the winner of our inaugural Dad Derby.
First of all they had to try to set the fastest lap on the Scalextric Race Track, lent to us by the great guys from Marquee Models. There were some budding Hamiltons, Buttons and Vettels as well as some who were, shall we say, a little slower! Then it was on to the Strong Man Hammer Strike with Dads having to hit the strike and ring the bell, something all the participating Dads were able to impress their kids with.
The third and fourth rounds required a little more effort and support from their kids. First of all were three questions from Level 2 SATs, one maths and two spelling questions. There was a little confusion, mainly caused by some parents not believing their children were right (!) but once again, teamwork came to their rescue and most families were able to get all questions right - sometimes with a little help from Mum!
And finally was the challenge that put many a strong man off entering the competition at all - the Tandem Space Hopper race. Dad and one of his children had to see how quickly they could compete the space hopper course, without coming off it or squashing each other. There were lots of thrills but no spills and a huge number of giggles as Dads and kids took part!
By the end of the day it was clear that the event had been huge fun for everyone who had taken part and it was time for the Centre to contact the winners, who came in on Wednesday to collect their prizes.
Winner was Jason Sagaran of Harlow who narrowly beat Andy Roberts, also of Harlow. Jason and his wife Nerissa brought their little boys, Jean-Luc aged nearly 3 and baby James (3 months) along to collect Dad's 'Winner' trophy and £100 Game gift card and £25 Tesco gift card. Andy brought along Joe aged 10 and twins, Billy and Katy, who were all keen to help Dad spend his £25 in Primark, Tesco & Wilkinson! Given the closeness of the competition there were prizes for third and fourth placed Dads, Geoffrey Richards who received a £50 Argos gift card, which we understand he is going to use to buy a new TomTom and Paul Johson who received a delicious Thornton's Chocolate Tasting Hamper and a selection of aftershaves from The Perfume Shop; we thank them for their kind donations. |
